All rangefinders are engineered and designed to do the same job. Although, the way this job is done depends on the technology a rangefinder utilizes. Currently, there are three rangefinder technologies and, therefore, three main types of distance measuring devices, including ultrasonic, optical and laser ones. Rangefinders of the first type send sound waves which then are reflected by an object and picked up by a receiver. Optical rangefinders use lenses and mirrors to measure the distance to an object, while laser ones rely on laser beams to calculate the distance they travel based on the time it takes for a beam to return.
