The lighters black matte finish gives it a smooth look and feel and is representative of the black 8-ball of a billiards game. All surfaces of a matte lighter are characterized with solid, flat color- free of shine, shimmer or gloss. Matte lighters are produced using a powder coat. The coating is then lasered off the hinge and bottom of the lighter to reveal the bottom stamp. The 1st matte lighter, which was black, was introduced into Zippo's stock line in 1984.
