Canteens can be insulated or non-insulated. They can be made from a variety of materials. The most traditional type of canteen is made from goatskin. However, many manufacturers use aluminum, plastic, and vinyl for their products. Most metal or aluminum units are wrapped with felt: when the cloth is wet, it keeps the water cool through evaporation that removes heat from the bottle. Plastic and vinyl models are lighter but less resistant to blows and scratches.
